Asynchronous Individual Presentations:
Flex your ‘Sociological Imaginations’ (20%)
For this assignment, you will be asked to flex your sociological imagination, sharing your learnings with the class in an asynchronous presentation format. Presentations will be due:
Thursday, March 31th.
For C. Wright Mills, the “sociological imagination” was about making necessary connections
between private troubles and public issues—connecting biography and history.
The task of the assignment is to take up the original challenge from Mills and apply it to course
material.
For this assignment, you are asked to deliver an asynchronous presentation on a recent
evidence-driven news story you have read in The Conversation Canada
(https://theconversation.com/ca)
Your task is to put this evidence-driven news story in conversation with the course material, by
drawing connections between the news story and your readings, focusing in on one concept
from our course textbooks, in relation to one of the following broad topics:
Government & Politics, Work & the Economy, Health & the Body, The Environment
The specific concept that you select to focus on within each of these topics, is up to you. The
task here is to (1) select one of the broad topics listed above (like, work, for example), then (2)
find an article related to that topic (use the search function on the website:
https://theconversation.com/ca), and then (3) make connections between the article and the
textbook.
In terms of the format for the asynchronous presentation, the presentation style is up to you:
present in a cohesive format, using a presentation style of your preference (podcast, blog post,
infographic, PowerPoint slides, etc.)
No matter the format you select, your presentation should be accompanied with a supporting
document, like a podcast transcript, or a presentation script. If you imagine that this presentation
would take approximately 5 minutes for your reader to work through, you’re looking at
somewhere around 700 words. In your supporting document, be sure to include references (APA
referencing style).
Suggested questions to address in your presentation.
• What is the news article about?
• Who wrote it?
• Why does it matter, and why should we care?
• How does the textbook help us to make sense of the news article?
o Which concept do you think helps us to think through the issue?
• What are the key takeaways?
• Where can we go to learn more about this topic?SOCI-Sociology 121-001
