ENGL 101 Research Paper Assignment (SU 21)

Research Paper Topic:

1) Region: North America (Canada, US, Both)

2) Topics: You will write a research essay on the same topic you have written your article review on from the following list for research.

· Eating Disorders (Anorexia/Obesity/Binge Eating)

· Gambling Addiction

· Police Force

· Professionalism (Ethnic Stigma among Professionals; Professional Identity)

· School Dropouts

· Social Media Usage (Communication Platform)

· Social Anxiety

Format:

· The essay should be a minimum of 2000 words (not including the title page or references) and follow APA formatting.

· A title/references page is required, and the essay should follow general paragraph patterns as taught in class.

· A total of 7-8 paragraphs is required for the assignment (an introduction, 1-2 background paragraph(s), 4 body paragraphs, and a conclusion). It should follow the patterns for paragraph organization and sentence structure according to the class lessons, additional notes, and as available in the course pack. The thesis statement should closely resemble the model discussed in class.

Resources & Evidence:

You will be required to provide at least 15-20 sources of evidence. As a research essay, you should use all possible methods to discover ideas for their topic. This should include the library, Google Scholar, Google Books, news search engines, government agencies and NGO websites, as well as any discipline specific internet websites. Evidence should include the variety of types including expert theory/testimony/interpretation, statistics, agreement, facts, case studies, & examples.

Research Paper Assignment & Policy

Drafts:

· You will be required to demonstrate your own writing skills by handing in drafts into the RP Drafts Dropbox.

· Any student handing in work without drafts will receive a grade of zero.

Learning Coach:

· Please meet with your LC on a weekly basis to get your tasks checked.

· To avoid receiving no grade for the assignment, please make sure you are handing in any writing drafts into the RP Drafts Dropbox on Moodle.

Plagiarism:

· Copying materials without proper citations or references:

· If a student’s work is found to have sentences or phrases from outside sources without a proper citation or quotation marks, there will be deductions applied to the overall grade, up to a maximum of 30%.

· If the instructor doubts the origin of the submitted work or it is apparent that the student’s submitted work does not reflect his/her actual writing ability, then an attempt will first be made to contact the student.

· If the student’s explanation is not sufficient or if there is no answer from the student, no grade will be awarded for the assignment and the assignment will be taken out of the student’s final grade.

Integrity in Online Learning 

As you study in the online environment, I require the following: 

1. Do your OWN work. This means that the critical thinking, evidence, organization, and all aspects of writing you have done yourself. You may receive help from me and the learning coach. You may have discussions about your ideas with your coach or with your classmates, but you must develop your thinking and not copy from each other. You cannot work together with a friend and submit almost the same ideas. 

2. Do not ask your roommate, friend, boy/girlfriend, homestay, brother or sister, or anyone else to help you. Do not ask other people to explain the assignments to you, study the videos for you, or teach you the course material. Rather, ask me or your learning coach/TWU writing tutor. 

3. NEVER send or share your essay or worksheet with other students. Sharing your work with another student is considered a form of academic dishonesty, and you will get a Record of Academic Misconduct. 

4. Use your OWN laptop to do all coursework (in all of your courses).  

5. NEVER share your TWU login with anyone. No one can log into your courses except you. If anyone else logs in to the course using your login, you will receive a Record of Academic Dishonesty which will go into your file in the Provost’s office, and you will receive a penalty in your grade. 

TWU Tutors and Learning Coaches  Students must attend a learning coach session once a week to receive fundamental writing support. Please make a weekly appointment through WC Online with your learning coach and bring your completed tasks/worksheets. After meeting your coach, make a revision on your work and save all drafts into a designated Draft Dropbox on Moodle to prove your own writing process. Learning coach attendance will be recorded for your professor’s reference and the final learning coach grades will be submitted to your instructor at the end of the semester. Unauthorized “help” will result in a 0 on the essay.
