Organizational Structure of the World Health Organization

The World Health Organization (WHO) was founded in 1948 as part of the United Nations. The major aim of the organization was to provide effective coordination among the health systems of the UN member states. The organization was also tasked with prioritizing the eradication of killer diseases such as respiratory diseases and malaria which had caused havoc in many countries especially African countries. The organization’s headquarters is based in the city of Geneva in Switzerland. The main mission of the WHO is to eradicate diseases and improve the lives of individuals.

I chose this organization because of the critical role that it plays in preventing diseases. For instance, WHO has intensified its humanitarian activities in countries such as Syria and South Sudan with the aim of protecting refugees from getting new infections (Yadav 2017). The organization also has mechanisms that can coordinate appropriate responses for an outbreak of diseases such as Cholera and Tuberculosis in various refugee camps around the world. The World Health Organization also has structures that cater for the welfare of healthcare workers. These structures however need to be improved due to the security threats that the health care workers are subjected to. These threats have forced many practitioners to flee the humanitarian camps hence creating high risk for the spread of contagious diseases. The organization should therefore engage key players such as the United Nations Security council for them to provide adequate security for the healthcare providers.

Various organizational concepts and behaviors can also be used to ensure that the welfare of the health care workers is protected. For instance, the United nations can deploy a Functional Organizational Structure which groups the UN peace keeping missions and the World Health Organization in one category (Yadav 2017). This will ensure that while the two groups conduct their humanitarian duties, the safety of the health care workers will be guaranteed as well as the health of the peace keeping troops.
