How Community Engagement Approach to a Health Concern meets the Needs of a Diverse Population

This is a literature piece that seeks to inform members of an interdisciplinary team of the approach that shall be taken when targeting an elderly community in a rural setting for health promotion. The approach that has been chosen is that of creating a rapport with the community and involving the community members during the exercise. The primary reason why the community engagement strategy is important is because it ensures that the initiative achieves greater ownership from the community as well as attracts more investors (Blais, 2015).  Besides, this method has been found to be more transparent and has a greater accountability for all the funds donated and given to the program. It has also been established that greater levels of participation are achieved together with a better understanding of the health concerns and an enhanced satisfaction for the consumers and the community (Stanhope, & Lancaster, 2015).

Barriers to Health Promotion

Some of the barriers to the provision of health promotion and disease prevention strategies in rural areas arise from challenges like deprived infrastructure, isolation, and poor specialty care (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2015). Given that the population is dominated by the elderly person who have a myriad of chronic problems, provision of healthcare is usually a big challenge (Huey Jr, Tilley, Jones & Smith, 2014).  As it has been seen in the brochure, the community under consideration has a majority of the residents from the same society. However, because of the different religions and some cultures and language, we might experience some difficulties in our activities.

How the Barriers can be Overcome

Nevertheless, our strategy of involving the community and using community heads as well as religious leaders to mobilize the communities to accept our promotion programs help to overcome the barriers. We shall also attempt to learn beforehand some of the culturally sensitive words and phrases and avoid using them during our program (Huey Jr et al., 2014). Besides, we shall seek to understand any of the alternative medicine used by the communities and integrate them if they can help in advancing our agenda.

Effectiveness of Health Promotion and Wellness Strategies

Community engagement in addressing health concerns for a particular society is the most effective method of promoting health and disease prevention. Engaging the community arrays any fears from the members and increases participation. Indeed, the opinion shapers of the community will go a long way in directing the community and highlighting the benefits of our health promotion campaigns (Shi & Singh, 2014).  I am confident that a healthy community contributes to a healthy nation and higher positive outcomes on the global scale. Healthcare promotion should start at the community level.
