The nursing theory that has motivated my ideals and responsibilities as an Intensive Care Unit nurse is Dr. Jean Watson’s Human Caring Theory. The fundamentals of this nursing theory relate to four elements: “human being, health, environment/society, and nursing” (Nursing Theory, 2016). Watson’s theory presents seven postulations: (1) Interpersonally is the sole way to exhibit and exercise caring adequately. (2) Caring incorporates carative elements producing the gratification of particular individual necessities. (3) The benefits of adequate caring result in good well-being and personal or family improvement. (4)

The influence of caring welcomes theperson as they are currently along with anything they transform into being. (5) A caring atmosphere produces the progression of ability at the same time enabling the individual to determine the appropriate measures for themselves. (6) The art of caring and the art of curing correspond to one another. (7) The convention of caring is integral to nursing (Nurselabs, September 12, 2019). Watson considers caring to be the predominant theme in nursing, and the recovery process and caring are shown disregard due to automation and duties related to nursing (Sourial, 1996).

Watson summarized her theory by using ten ‘carative factors’. Welcoming benevolent virtues and be considerate to humanity and yourself is the first factor. Secondly, encourage a belief system and respect individuals. The third factor is to have confidence in yourself and humankind. These three components of her theory are the “philosophical foundation” for the science of caring, while the seven remaining factors derive from that foundation (Nursing Theory, 2016). The fourth is forming a helpful and trustful connection with someone. Number five is foster and embrace optimistic and pessimistic sentiments. The sixth element of the theory is the application of critical thinking approaches when making choices. In seventh place is the importance of educating the patient. Number eight is developing a therapeutic atmosphere. Ninth relates to supporting and attending biological, religious, psychological requirements.

Lastly, number ten is being open to “allowing existential-phenomenological” and permitting miracles to happen (Berman, 2008, p. 47). Watson’s theory embraces a personal attribute in nursing that makes it gratifying but difficult. She wishes all nurses to be outstanding in their field and provide the patient what is warranted. Her theory spotlights caring for individuals instead of focusing on procedures, techniques, and automation. When nurses integrate Watson’s theory into their day-to-day practice, it aids the patient in healing times.

Nurses do this by taking time with their patients and not being in a rush to leave the room, taking an extra moment to hear what the patient is trying to say, and by motivating the patient to be active in their care. The quality of care a patient receives when one incorporates Watson’s nursing theory into their routine is much improved. Everyone prospers, spiritually, emotionally, and physically when the nurse integrates the Theory of Human Caring into their methods. My values lead me to deliver superior assistance with compassion and, at the same time, establishing a safe and comforting setting. In my work setting, I am mindful that my patients are human beings, just like myself, and they are not objects or afflictions and are entitled to the best individualized care and consideration I can administer.

As a patient advocate, I motivate my patients to speak up and be instrumental voices in their health care needs. Being an Intensive Care Unit nurse, I realize this is about the last place someone wants to be while hospitalized. I speak with a soft and soothing tone to help promote trust and relaxation with my patients. I

spend time with my patients and pay attention to what they have to say, what they might need or want, and lend emotional and spiritual support when appropriate. One of the ways I incorporate the caring theory into my nursing practice is to make sure my patients’ comfort level is acceptable while helping to ease their pain or other symptoms. Once comfort is established, I incorporate communication regarding their care plan. By asking open-ended questions, I will create an assessment of emotional and physical needs for the patient.

Once we form the nurse-patient relationship, I assess their level of comprehension regarding their health condition and aid in enhancing their social bond, confidence, and accomplishments, which is fundamental to the caring theory. Most of all, I will sit down, make eye contact, and listen to my patient on their worries and fears about their illness, making sure they become actively involved with their care. Two Historical Nursing Figures Florence Nightingale contributed transformation and improvement in the care of individuals and emphasized to what degree the surroundings or atmosphere played in the patient recuperation process.

Of great concern to her was the well-being of the armed service and cleanliness of the environment where nurses administer care. Jean Watson acknowledges that a person’s health is influenced considerably by an optimistic viewpoint, faithfulness, and hopefulness. Her theory shaped the way we view personal interaction and the connection to how patients recover.

Florence Nightingale’s concentrated on the patient’s surroundings in recuperating, and Jean Watson’s main concern was the caring nature the nurse exhibits toward the patient. Nightingale and Watson’s theories express distinct concepts with similar views regarding administering care to patients with kindness and not downplaying their health condition.
