Guidelines for Essay Part One: Proposal
Write and intro paragraph (150-200 words) that ends with your thesis statement.
● Note: please read Essay Part Two information below, before you begin
Essay Part One.
First Choose: One historical artist (Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque/Dutch Golden Age, Neoclassical, or 19th-20th century)

This will be the subject of your in-depth analysis.
○ Please Include…
■ Name, nationality, and birth/death dates of the artist
■ An image of the artwork you are considering writing
about
■ State the title of the artwork you chose, the period (be
sure you are identifying it correctly), year, medium,
dimensions, and country of origin (can be listed under
the image of the work).

○ Identify and look up the period of the artwork and learn its
typical uses of elements/principles/themes/subjects/qualities,
which you will describe in your introduction here (and later analyze
in your essay). How are these characteristics used in your artwork
in ways that are particular to the period? (If they aren’t specific to
the period, don’t write about them).
○ Find at least one usage of an element or principle, and one
subject or theme, which are USED in a way specific to the
period. Find a total of three to four elements/principles and
subjects/themes (please describe each one using these specific
terms. If they aren’t specific to the period, don’t write about them).
Intro+ Draft Thesis statement
● Introduce the historical artist, the artwork and especially the period and its
historical conditions (as related to the artwork).○ Address how this artwork is a product of its period, and what is
the visual evidence you will present, to support this? (how are
the one to two elements or principles, and one to two themes,
subjects, or qualities USED in a way specific to the period? State
your argument as to how the artwork’s elements, principles,
themes, subjects, or qualities are used in ways influenced by its
period. If you have trouble finding this information, please ask me
and/or the SRJC Library staff.
■ The final sentence in your intro paragraph should be
your thesis statemnt. Please highlight your
one-sentence thesis statement.
■ Using this artwork as an example of its period, write
a preliminary thesis statement for your
essay–focused on the formal elements/principles,
subject/theme, and historical context of the historical
artwork as they relate to its period.
■ Your thesis statement should be so specific that it can
only be stated about this particular artwork and its
period. Please check your thesis against these

Citations
■ Find and cite at least two research sources on the
artist, artwork and especially the period from my
recommended sources(LISTED AT END OF GOOGLE
DOC).
■ At least one of your sources should be about just the
period: identify the period of the historical artwork and
search for sources about it.
■ Please list ALL sources you use, in APA citation format,
on your proposal.
■ Sources can be books, an electronic resource,
magazine/journal article, video, etc. that is in the library
collection or on my resource list. Note that different
formats are cited differently: the librarians can help
you with the correct citation format. Essay Part Two: First Draft is due 4/17: what you need to know now, to
write your proposal
● The focus of the essay will be on your historical artist (Medieval,
Renaissance, Baroque/Dutch Golden Age, Neoclassical, or 19th-20th
century)
● For this artist, you will do an in-depth analysis of one of their artworks as
related to its period, including…
○ Formal Analysis based on Period: how are the
elements/principles used in ways specific to the period? (stay
focused: if they aren’t used in ways specific to the period, don’t
write about them).
○ Content Analysis based on Period: how are the
elements/principles used to convey the theme? (stay focused: if
they aren’t used in ways that convey the theme, don’t write about
them). How are the subject and theme specific to the period?
(stay focused: learn the typical subjects and themes of the period,
and look for them in the artwork. If they are not typical of the
period, find a artwork where they are).
○ Contextual analysis of Period (historical context): why did
these formal/content characteristics come about, during this
period? What historical conditions influenced the period? How did
those conditions specifically impact women, and/or how were
