Monsters in the Mirror: Reflections of Human Morality

Background: In Stephen T. Asma’s “Monsters and the Moral Imagination,” he discusses how monsters—both classic and contemporary—reflect more than just fears and anxieties, but that these inhuman monsters embody very human concerns: morality, responsibility, and humanity.  

Prompt: In a well-developed essay, identify Asma’s main claim about the connection between monsters and human morality and analyze how Asma supports this claim. Consider specific examples that convey possible definitions of morality. Be sure to provide a Works Cited page as the last page of your essay (not included in the page count). Your essay should be a minimum of three full pages and no more than five pages.

1. Begin by introducing the article (Title, Author, Genre) and providing a brief synopsis. 2. Clearly state Asma’s main claim about the connection between monsters and human morality.  3. Be sure to provide specific passages from the text that illustrate the author’s claims. Minimally, you should integrate two pieces of textual evidence (concrete details) in each body paragraph. 4. End by rephrasing your main claim (thesis), supporting claims, and final thoughts about the topic. 5. Finally, include a Works Cited page as the last page of your essay (not included in the minimum page count).

This essay is worth 100 points. Your essay will be graded according to the following criteria:

Unity/Focus (25 points): The writer presents a cogent analysis of or response to the text.  The main claim (thesis) should be clear, original, and interesting.  Theessay is controlled by a main claim, and eachparagraph is controlled by a clear topic sentence (supporting claim).

Development/Support/Elaboration (25 points): The writer elaborates on that response with well-chosen examples, in depth and thorough analysis, and persuasive reasoning. The central idea is developed in the essay through well-chosen and appropriate concrete details from the texts.

Coherence/Organization (20 points): The essay conforms to an organizational pattern that facilitates reader understanding, using organizational patterns to demonstrate the relatedness of ideas and to enhance the power of the argument.  The essay has a clear introduction, body, and conclusion, which are related to the main claim.  Transitions help the paper to flow smoothly.
