NURSING AS A PROFESSION

I am a migrant, migrating from Haiti to United States in the year 2010, a memorable year for many reasons. I had no family around and no mentor to give me some guidance. But this challenge transformed into an opportunity for me as I adapted to my existing situation and learned English. Today I believe that if you truly want to excel then you have to have your heart unto it.

NURSING AS A PROFESSION Nursing is a profession that is as old as human history. In primitive societies there was no formal education for the care of the sick and the art of nursing was only learnt by means of oral tradition passed from one generation to another. It was during the early Christian era that nurses groups were formed as the role of deaconess gave women to participate in the caring work provided by the church and it was n 1873, when the first training schools were founded. Today nursing is an opportunity and a job which is carried out to help the ailing.

My outlook on education is that today, more than any other day, it is crucial to complete my college education, if I truly yearn to be successful in modern day’s health care system. Education alone is a chance for a person to enhance their knowledge and skills by learning new things, education also motivates to surge ahead and be responsible at the same time.

For me it is much more than a profession, because I was born and brought up in a country where people do not live long, morbidity is high which is due to many reasons, the most significant being malnutrition and lack of health heath care facilities. During the unforgettable earthquake of 2010, my eyes have witnessed how desperately people tried to get proper medical care. I was there trying to help the injured who were crying in pain and I did try to do my best to help them till medical teams arrived. There are moments which not only change the course of life, but also make one to choose and decide a future for them, and I too decided nursing as my profession for the future. There is one profession which is as close to the human beings as it is close to God, and that is nursing, a profession of caring. After a lot of contemplation about career I was glad to see how much love and care is offered for the ailing in the medical profession.  I decided to become a Nurse because I like to help those who need it most, the ailing and the sick and the elderly. Because I have this yearning I am confident to complete my education timely with devotion and commitment (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2004).

One of the finest achievements for me was receiving my high school diploma with adorable marks. And the other satisfaction for me was when I volunteered for the elderly in a local old age home and this experience still gives me pleasure and sense of pride.

In the course of time I learned more about nursing today. I came to know that nurses not only care the ailing but help in physical checks, counseling, make critical decisions when urgent actions are required and when a physician is not available. In an era of rapid global changes, nurses also work in camps, shelters in remote areas. Today when a contagion like Ebola is spreading like wildfire in parts of Africa, the nurses along with the doctors and health care professionals are working to take care of the affected persons. I opted for nursing as my career is due to the fact that I have always been a sort of helping hand since my younger days, and it was at that time that I realized that nursing is ‘the’ profession for me. Being a nurse means that you should be a lovable and caring person yourself, graceful in your stride and behavior. I want to give the best possible care to those who are needy, it not only gives a sense of ‘a job well done’ but also you feel happy, truly happy. In addition, nursing has a lot of benefits such as respect and good working conditions.

It was very easy for me to choose an institution to pursue my career because Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) is one of the best institutions for medical science programs. FAMU has enshrined in its glowing history, great values. The reason that made me apply at your prestigious institution is the fact that a Bachelor’s from your famed nursing institute means much more to me.

I plan to become a certified Nurse with a degree in nursing, because this will open for me many new roles as a clinical specialist. With a degree in nursing from FAMU, I will be able to provide care patients with complex health problems as well as research clinical problems linked with patient care.

My passion of nursing is also because I believe that we should help those who are ailing, poor, needy, helpless and are desperately in need of nursing care. It is in this great institution where I can learn integrity, accountability, modern skills and better discipline. It is in this institution that I will be taught by eminent scholars and teachers in a serene surrounding and amongst students belonging to various cultures. I have heard so many great things about this great institution, now it is time for me to join them by studying here. I am really passionate about making nursing my identity.
