Self-facilitated experiential learning activity Deliverables: Problem-Solution Video & Reflection on Experiential Learning

Due April 25th, 2021, 11:59 p.m.

We recognize that our class contains students with diverse personal circumstances, and it is not possible for all students to participate in a hackathon, start up weekend, or engineering competition. Therefore, as a more accessible option, we have created an experiential learning activity that you can self-facilitate.

Context of the activity

Future Agenda is an organization that runs the world’s leading global foresight program that explores important issues that society will face within the next decade. They develop insights about issues by running workshops around the world, bringing together people from corporations, government, academia, and non-governmental organizations. The Lassonde School of Engineering is Future Agenda’s Canadian university partner, and in 2018 we hosted a workshop on the Future Value of Data.

Future Agenda’s interim summary of the Future Value of Data is posted on eclass, and you will use this as a reference for completing the experiential learning activity.

Structure of the activity

1. OPTIONAL – We would like you to form a group of 2 to 5 people to complete the activity. Other group members can be from ENG1101 or you can also invite people who are not currently taking the course.

2. Individually or as a group review the context of the Future Value of Data project on slides 1-7 of the interim summary document posted.

3. Review the analogies for data on slides 9-18. Which ones resonate with you the most? 4. Individually or as a group review the insights on slides 21-61. Discuss which insights you think

will be the most important in the next decade. Pick the one insight that you think is most important.

5. Do your own research about the insight that you have selected. Develop an opportunity (or define a problem statement) based on that insight. Phrase the problem statement in the form a “how might we…” question.

6. Apply creative problem-solving strategies to come up with an optimal conceptual solution to your problem statement.

7. Communicate your problem statement and conceptual solution in the form of a 3-minute video. Present your idea as if you are pitching it to potential investors. You may use recorded video, animations or narrated powerpoint. If done as a group, please ensure everyone equally participates in the video.

8. Upload your video to eClass submission for alternative assignment 6 (Due EOD April 25th 2021). Each person in your group should submit a link to the video separately on eclass.

9. Complete the reflection exercise, similar to the regular Assignment 6, described below (Due EOD April 25th 2021). kingsley Highlight

Reflection on Experiential Learning Due April 25th, 2021, 11:59 p.m.

An experiential education activity gives you the opportunity to apply concepts and theories to a real-life or simulated real-life experience. The act of purposeful reflection is the important first step in drawing meaning from an experience, and in guiding you to establish new ideas and to engage in new learning experiences.

Although you did not participate in a hackathon/competition for assignment 6, you should still have completed the activity of Future Insights agenda (described above) and write a similar reflection piece on it. Being engaged will help you build relationships and connections that will support your education and development as future engineers. Although the following requirements are geared for an in-person experiential event, you should still relate these to the Future Agenda activity (above) in a manner that is reflective and provides some insights for your future self-improvement and growth.

Requirements

Write a reflection about the experiential learning gained from completing the Future Agenda activity described above. As a guideline, your reflection should be between 500 and 1000 words. Upload your reflection using the Turnitin link on eclass for Assignment 6 . Your reflection should do the following.

1. Summarize the Future Agenda Activity • Describe the relevant information about the task(s) and process. • Chronologically organize the processes you attempted to complete the task or objective.

2. Identify the important aspects • Differentiate and distinguish important aspects of Future Agenda. As examples, you may wish

to consider: o How you made decisions o How you performed as a team o What was challenging o What succeeded and what failed

• Identify the main points and key themes

3. Identify personal thoughts and feelings • How did you feel about (or react to) the important aspect of the experience? • What points of view, biases, values, and/or intentions underlie those personal feelings or

reactions?

4. Construct cause-and-effect relationships • Explain the important aspects of the experience by explaining the underlying causes that lead to

5. Connect to ENG 1101 • Compare the concepts from ENG 1101 (i.e. creative problem solving, communication, ethics).

Focus on how lessons from class played out on a real project.

6. Relate to other contexts • Do one or more of the following:

o Provide one or more specific examples of other situations in which you have experienced similar aspects (e.g. working in a group, solving problems, etc)?

o Compare similarities and differences between this event and the other examples that you identified.

o How does this experience relate to your professional or goals?

7. Plan for future practice • If you were to repeat the event, what would you do in the same way? • If you were to repeat the event, what would you do differently? • What might be the benefits and challenges of doing things differently?
