This can be achieved effectively using an infographic: a visual representation of data, concepts or instructive material.
A good infographic combines diagrams/images and a limited amount of text to convey information quickly and accurately to the reader.
Your assignment is to create a unique infographic that describes and explains one aspect of the visual system, or a disease of the visual system. Imagine you are producing the infographic either for use in a university online module to explain aspects of the visual system or for display on the website of a foundation dedicated to this visual disease .
The level of detail should be sufficient to explain
the key clinical aspects of the condition/disease but without technical jargon. Some examples to use as a guide for both layout and content are provided at the end of this document. Create a static engaging and informative visual resource. Do not use animations or video. You should use multiple sources of peer reviewed literature. The best source of information will be review papers. Do not use websites as your source, although these may help you find the original article where the information came from. For each statement (or image) you insert, the source should be referenced with a number (at the end of the text block or in the corner of the image/diagram) and the source references
provided in a list somewhere on the infographic.

Instructions for the infographic
• Create a one-page (A4 or A3 size) infographic on the aspect of the visual system or disease of the visual system you are allocated.
• If you are covering an aspect of the visual system you should consider covering the following points:
Describe/define the topic
Phenomenology (what are the properties of what you are covering) Cause (what aspects of the visual system cause this phenomenon)
Function (what changes bring this phenomenon about) Unknowns (what do we still not understand)
• If you are covering a disease you should consider covering the following points:
Describe the condition/disease
Occurence (how common it is; any occupational, developmental, age or racial factors) Aetiology (what causes the disease, e.g. injury, defective genes)

• Generate your infographic in Word, PowerPoint or any other package that works well for you, just make sure you can save it as a text-based PDF (*.pdf) file for final submission. (Turnitin will not accept PDF image files such as those generated from a scanned document.) Usually you can ‘Export’ or ‘Save As’ a PDF from Word or PowerPoint. Organized – the infographic should have a ‘flow’ that helps take the reader through the information from start to finish. This can be achieved through design, e.g. arranging information top-to-bottom, or through arrows, flowcharts, etc.
Accurate – do your research and use key selected data to support your statements
Uncluttered – the message should be clear and the information easy to read
Accessible – don’t use very small fonts that would be difficult to read, don’t use complicated language or unnecessary abbreviations
• Write all text in your own words and give a numbered source reference that relates to a full citation given somewhere on the infographic
• You can use images/diagrams taken from publications and the web, but you must provide a source citation.
Note however you show greater comprehension and understanding if you create your own images/diagrams.

Presenting the infographic in class
Prior to submission of the final infographic you will have a chance to present your infographic in your practical class. This is a chance for you to get feedback on your infographic prior to final submission. Present your infographic for just two minutes. Talk to each of the key points your infographic presents and guide your audience through the flow of the infographic. You may also wish to speak to any particular design decisions you made or design challenges you faced.
Please submit your infographic to Turnitin before your practical class so that it can be displayed in class. You will be able to revise and resubmit your inforgraphic after the presentation in case you want to update it.
Grading rubric
This assignment will be marked out of 12 and is worth 6% of your Unit mark. Grading will be based on the following rubric:
• Scientific content of infographic [maximum 6 marks]
Incomplete or inaccurate information, confusing or irrelevant statements or images, incomplete or no referencing, evidence of plagiarism [0-2 marks]
Information mostly accurate but missing key components, referencing accurate and complete [3-4 marks]
Comprehensive and accurate information describing the condition/disease, fully referenced content with complete source reference list [5-6 marks]
• Presentation and design of infographic [6 marks]
Infographic has too much text, images/diagrams too small to read easily, poorly organized with no clear flow of information, evidence of plagiarism [0-2 marks]
Infographic has an appropriate balance of images/diagrams and text, an obvious flow or hierarchy of information, but with some confusing statements or links between components [3-4 marks]
An exceptionally clear and visually appealing infographic with obvious hierarchy or directional flow of the information [5-6 marks]
