Humans by nature are social creatures. Humans need interactions to thrive. With being social creatures there comes a price to be paid and that price can be a steep one. The currency is the social view of gender expectations, confrontation between different cultures, the identifying factors of race and ethnicity, sexual orientations, socioeconomic status, education/academia, alleged barriers and both physical and learning disabilities (Kerka, 2003). These factors are always in fluctuation due to the ever increasing population both nationally and globally. Career counselors should “have their finger on the pulse” of how these societal and structural factors are influencing the career development. Applying these factors and their diversity to the career counseling will provide a more current and skilled counseling advice.

Advocating for client will be done through skilled and current counseling and advocating for changes in the work place that will help in providing equality to everyone regardless of backgrounds. Advocating for these changes and acceptances is something that, at this time, a never ending process and will change in how it is done as career counselors acquire a better understanding of the cultural changes and the change in the needs of their clients.

Influencing interactions in the work place-cultural beliefs play a role in determining how people of different ethnic groups, races, and gender associate with each other. For instance, cultural ethnicity may lead to tribalism or preferences for one ethnic group than the other in the way opportunities are granted. Cultural racism may also lead to discrimination in the workplace, thus creating an unconducive environment that discourages career development. Based on gender, cultural beliefs may lead to gender inequality in the workplace. One gender is preferred over the other, preventing from putting more effort into career development. Ways through which counseling professionals may advocate for clients in this critical domain entail; encouraging individuals to follow their passions. It will help rule out the notion that specific jobs are made for a particular race or gender and make people indulge in what they view as best for them. Secondly, they may encourage individuals to discover their own identities. It will assist in ruling out undesirable cultural beliefs that tie people down, thus impacting career development. If individuals view group work or individual work as the best option, then so be it. The professionals may also advocate for the enhancement of good social relations in the work environment. ensures colleagues interact well and building on each other without breeding room for discrimination based on cultural disparities
