Family is an integral unit in the community and is the primary socializing platform/agent a child engages and interacts with. It also has a significant influence on the moral, mental, social, and physical development of the child (Fomby & Cherlin, 2007). The one outstanding responsibility of the family is in training and bringing up the child in the values and norms of the society. In this case, Mabuza et al. (2014) observed that the basis and foundation of what an individual becomes in the society are established and founded at home, which is the first stage of life. However, some circumstances exist in families where the parenting role is left in the hands of a single parent. These circumstances comprise divorce, rape, denied paternity, different forms of separation, and death of one partner/spouse (Fomby & Bosick, 2013). The society is faced with the reality of broken family structures, which adversely impact on the development of children in particular. The focus, therefore, is on analyzing a case study about child development involving Siyasanda, a 17-year-old student, who struggles with psychosocial challenges attributed to being raised by a single parent, and having to grow in a broken and challenging family background/setting.
