Childhood Illness/Condition Report: (Topic must be per-approved).

Each student will research and summarize one childhood disease, illness, health condition, disorder or problem that is common to school-age children/youth. Each student will prepare a written report (6-10pages excluding title page and reference page).

Childhood Research Report Requirements:
A. Name of Disease/Illness/Disorder/Health Condition: Identify name, common and medical terms

used.

B. Description:

State a description of the Disease/Illness/Disorder/Health Condition.
What is the causative agent? (name of pathogen, risk factors, behaviors)
What is/are the mode(s) of transmission? How does the disease/Illness/Condition develop?
What are the signs? (objective indicator(s), measurable, visible signs of illness such as rash, fever,bleeding, and/or the behavior)
What are the symptoms? (subjective indicators of illness usually difficult to measure such as pain,fatigue, weakness, restlessness)

If applicable:

Incubation period of disease? (time between pathogen entering system/body and the appearance of signs/symptoms).
Communicable/Contagious period? (time period in which the disease can be spread from one person to another)

C. Incidence and Prevalence:

Provide the incidence and prevalence of the Disease/Illness/Disorder/Health Condition.
Are the numbers increasing or decreasing?
Are there any trends?

D. Treatment:

1. Are there treatments available?
2. What is the treatment? Be specific
3. Where and how is the Disease/Illness/Disorder/Health Condition treated?

E. Prevention:

1. Discuss preventative measures that can be taken.

F. Community Impact:

What is being done at the federal, state, and community level to prevent and treat this disease.(state program names or bills)
Are there any community, school, research programs in place? (Include program names for each)

G. Implications for the Educator/Teacher:

What types of actions/adjustments will a teacher in the school setting need to make for a child with the Disease/Illness/Disorder/Health Condition?
Prevention: How could the school or classroom teacher prevent transmission?
Classroom Environment: What modifications might be required?
Adaptations of the curriculum: What types of curriculum changes will the teacher make for a student(s) with this disease/health condition? Be specific

To display creativity in your choice of how you apply these concepts to your photo. COMPOSED OF THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS 1. A summary explanation of the theoretical concept. This section should be a comprehensive but concise summary of the concept. Think of this short section the following way: Imagine that you are going to visit my Soc 003 class next quarter and teach the concept to that class. What needs to be understood? What is relevant? This section of the paper should be no more than 2 paragraphs (8 sentences) maximum. 2. A picture that reflects some essential qualities of the concept. You will take a picture of something in your life that reflects this concept. You must take the image yourself. The photos should get at some fundamental quality of the concept. The photos must be appropriate for a college class, that is, no offensive material (your paper receive zero points in this case). 3. An analysis that discusses the ways the photo reflects the concept. The TAs will be looking to discern the extent to which you are able to connect the sociological concept to current/everyday social life.
