Hiring and Selection Case
Ron supervises three operations at ACME Company – filling, packing, and labeling. He was promoted from within the organization. Last week, Ron informed his operations manager Dan that he was resigning for a better-paying job and one that is closer to his residence. Ron gave Dan a month’s notice and offered to onboard the new supervisor.
Each operation is staffed with a crew of lowly-skilled employees but with long tenure and decent pay. Over the course of their employment, they have formed a bond and an informal leader has surfaced from each crew. Ron is facing several operational issues. Employee motivation has been diminished. Morale is low, and absenteeism is at 10%. Overtime rate has risen to 20%. Employees perceive obvious favoritism and unfair labor practices. The productivity numbers are way below standard, and product returns have risen. Each crew seems to work as an island, and intergroup conflict is brewing. Communication is hampered by conflict, indifference, and alienation. Among the groups, Ron has identified two new college graduates as his potential successor; however, the groups especially the informal leaders have not accepted them completely. Therefore, neither can expect a warm welcome from employees who may be passed over for the promotion. Dan is thinking of recruiting outside candidates for the position. This person must be fit for the job and quickly address the issues facing the operations.
You are tasked to hire and select the best candidate for the job. Apply all the organizational behavior theories and concepts you have learned over the past few weeks.

Write My Essay For MeResearch and present the following requirements:
Job description – List all the job information, qualifications, and responsibilities suitable for this position.
Recruitment plan – Design how to draw the best applicants for this job including advertising, job posting, and any incentives.
Selection process – Use an effective method for narrowing down the list for and selecting the best applicant.
Interview Questionnaire – Prepare a list of questions that will be asked during the interview process.
You have been provided with two areas in the course to discuss and collaborate: (1) group discussion forum and (2) wiki collaboration area. Only team members have access to these areas, and they will be able to see the discussion and the work done within these areas. You are also free to use tools outside of the course, such as Google Docs, Yammer, etc. if your group chooses to do so.
Your final paper is due in Unit 7. You will have Unit 6 and Unit 7 to work together to collaborate on the paper. Once you are finished everyone in your group must post a copy of the final paper in the Team Activity Submission area in Unit 7.
Team papers should be a minimum of 5 pages in length and cite at least ten (10) additional sources. All team members must take part in the preparation of the assignment. All papers should also include a cover page listing the names of all members, a team page indicating the role(s) and responsibilities of each team member, and a reference page. The paper should be well-written. Check all content for grammar and spelling. Be sure that you have properly cited all resources used in the creation of the presentation in APA format.
Welcome to Unit 7! You are now in the second and final week of your Team Project. Beyond pleasantries, I would expect that your team is hard at work researching the finer details of the Candidate Hiring and Selection process. Both conceptual and industry practices must be covered for a robust and substantive presentation. Additionally, the use of company templates may be helpful as you navigate the best practices in the field. Our learning this week on leadership, power, and ethical behavior should help to bolster the substance of your team paper.
Do spend some time discussing the four phases of the hiring process, as each one offers opportunities to select the best candidate for this business case. Sub-topics such as compensation and fringe benefits package, selection scorecard matrix, skills assessment, etc. are integral to employment. I would want to see the content discussed in the Wiki Area, not in the Discussion Forum. As we move along this Unit, I will give further instructions. Watch for them!
At this time, I am expecting that you are already in the collation part of your collaborative work. Remember, this is not a piecemeal assignment; rather it is a collaborative effort to put together a Candidate Hiring and Selection business case paper. In some classes, what students do is to make individual papers and then collaborate on the best way to come up with a final paper. In other classes, students research and discuss together what to put on the sections. The method is entirely up to you.
Here are some guidelines to observe:
- Note the specific requirements for each question.
a. Identification – Describe the leadership traits, skills, styles, and behaviors that are fit for this managerial job (person-job fit model). This part is research-heavy and so I look forward to reading information from outside sources. Job description must be a targeted activity with specific requirements enumerated.
b. Design – This part is asking for your “recruitment” approach and strategy. Research person-job fit and person-organization fit models. What recruitment channels and tools would you apply to solicit qualified applicants for this job? I would want to see at a minimum a job advertisement included in your recruitment design phase (These may be included in the body or cited as appendices).
c. Method – There are several methods for applicant selection available in literature. Be sure to choose a method(s) that will address the business case effectively.
d. Interview – You may find some template questionnaires that you may customize for this project. Be sure to put the template in the Appendix. You may also want to create your own set of questions that will specifically deal with the situation described in the business case. For example, determine how a candidate would respond to situations like employee morale, skill level, culture and change, conflict, union intervention, rewards and recognition, etc. (The questionnaire, usually 20-25 items, may be included in the body or cited as an appendix).
- The team paper must be presented as ONE VOICE – cohesive, consistent writing style, and smooth flowing. Let me know if you have any concerns.
- Given the time differences, at a minimum by Tuesday have the final draft available. Each student must have a copy of the final paper to be submitted. Always be mindful of computer glitches and possible downtimes. This is a team project; therefore, let me be clear – I WILL NOT GRADE any individually-prepared research paper submitted to me.
Team Paper Structure
A graduate team paper must look professional and well-structured. As a team, prepare a final paper that not only conforms to APA formatting guidelines but more so, it is well-structured avoiding nuances during the reading and analysis. For long research papers, beware of heading levels in your presentation. Typically, the paper structure follows this top-down approach (APA Manual, 2020):
- Main Title – First level heading is required. Use the title case format, capitalizing any proper nouns and acronyms. It is also used for other main titles, such as Conclusion and Recommendations, References, Appendices, etc.
- Main Topics – Second level heading is a must. Here, you want to separate the discussion from the main title with sectioning of the main parts of the paper.
- Sub-Components – Third level heading must be observed. In each main topic, use the third level heading to separate the components from each other.
- Subtopics – Fourth level heading alerts the reader to the subtopics within the sub-components.
- Subtopic Components – Fifth level heading is in order for any topics within the subtopics. This level is advisable for papers with more than 28 pages.
The paper structure will become evident once you prepare your outline. You will see in skeleton view how the body of the paper would look like. Refer to Table 2.3 – Format for the Five Levels of Heading in APA Style on page 48 of the APA Manual 7th edition. I expect to see the headings properly formatted and presented in your final paper. Let me know of any questions you might have.
Note: The same instructions apply to your individual paper. So far, only a few students follow the heading format correctly.

You have been assigned to a team. Together you will discuss the case provided below and prepare a hiring and selection case paper. This is your opportunity to apply all the lessons learned in this course. For this activity, you will remain with the team until Unit 7.
