Effective Community Mental Health Care in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
INTRODUCTION:
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (PPACA), includes expansion of mental health services available and accessible in the community. * Effective community mental health care is imperative and crucial to promote and maintain mental health in the community and to the society as a whole. * It aims to prevent the occurrence of debilitating and unstable conditions due to limited care.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
- The need for evidence-based practice in psychiatric and mental health nursing in three major areas: * Personnel (researchers and clinicians) * Process (conduct and dissemination of evidence-based research) * Product (change in practice based on evidence) * Extend mental health services in medical homes and community health centers. * Education in the need to understand mental illness as a medical condition to promote the reversal of social exclusion, discrimination and social isolation which result in stigma. * Further research on treatment goals of mental illness geared towards remission and enhancement of availability and access.
BACKGROUND:
PPACA addresses the following: * More parity- based on the Paul Wellstone and Pete Dominici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Act of 2008, additional coverage via state-based insurance exchanges in 2014. * More help with Medicaid- in 2014, benefits covering mental health and substance abuse will apply to people who will be eligible to join Medicaid for the first time and will help those who are severely impaired by mental illness. * Integrating mind and body- by creating
