Current Event – Free and Fair Trade

Option 1: Finding a Recent Article

            The article by Laura He titled “A US-China trade war is the last thing the world economy needs now Anchor Muted Background”, published in the CNN Business is about the implication of the United States-China trade on free and fair trade amidst the coronavirus pandemic. He (2020) observes that blame over the pandemic has reignited trade tensions between two superpowers – the U.S. and China. The trade wars between the two countries that began close two years ago have been exacerbated by the pandemic leaving the global economy in a more fragile position. The article points out that another full-blow trade war would cause more damage than it is currently. The trade war has drawn a lot of attention from around the world, especially in Europe, over the potential implications on the global economy.

           Research funded by the S&P Global Ratings determined that the higher tariffs’ threat significantly and further impacting free and fair trade between the U.S. and China, including other countries, would disrupt “technology trade and investment” and, in the process, depowers what remains a promising engine for economic recovery in the rest of 2020 (He, 2020). The article documents that the unrealistic terms that characterized the trade tariffs signed in January 2020, between both countries, is currently impossible to. For instance, the virus-induced business slowdown would make it almost impossible for China to commit an additional $200 billion in imports from the United States in the next two years (He, 2020). The commitment from more than what China imported annually before the trade war and the signing of business and tariff deals with the United States.

           Notably, as documented in the article, economic experts and the Chinese leaderships remain resolute in ensuring the “phase one” deal signed in January 2020 by both country’s work (He, 2020). At the same time, the quest to have a reasonable and workable free and fair trade deals between both countries continues to be impacted by external factors such as the political tensions and the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, the U.S. administration is frustrating Chinese businesses from flourishing in the country, for example, the restrictions on Huawei to do business with tech companies in the U.S. (He, 2020). Such restrictions place both countries, especially China, in an awkward position as to whether to continue committing to phase one deal or retaliate against the U.S. decisions to allow Huawei to operate without interference.             From the article, the issue is the continued trade wars between the United States and China. The trade wars continue to significantly impact the political tranquility and smooth business operations between the two countries, and others who depend on global economic stability (He, 2020). The issue poses great concern not only between the two countries but also an economic threat to the rest of the world. In this case, if tensions continue to grow and escalate, the trade dispute would morph into a damaging implication…
