Types of diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a collection of disorders that are caused by improper functioning of insulin in the body. Insulin plays a vital role of regulating blood’s sugar levels by signaling the liver and fat cells to retract glucose from the blood (Khan Academy, n.d.). Since diabetes is described as a group of disorders, different types of diabetes are caused by the unique condition. There are three major types of diabetes, which include Type 1, Type 2 and miscellaneous diabetes depending on their causes.

Type 1 diabetes is common in children and results from genetic predisposition. It happens through generations, and new family members are likely to acquire it. It is also caused by some unknown environmental conditions that an individual experience in the early years of life (Zaccardi et al., 2016). The state causes autoimmune disorder, which causes the immune system to attack the beta cells of the pancreas hence preventing from producing insulin. It is also referred to as insulin deficiency diabetes since it limits production of insulin by the pancreas.

Type 2 diabetes is common during adulthood and is also associated with genetics and inheritance. Its environmental causes include hypertension and obesity which limit the cells throughout the body to respond to insulin (Khan Academy, n.d.). It is also known as insulin resistance diabetes since the pancreases secrete insulin at a reasonable rate but the cells are unable to respond effectively.

Although Type I and Type II diabetes are the major causes of Diabetes mellitus, there are other miscellaneous causes of the disease. For instance, drug-induced diabetes results from medications such as glucocorticoids, which are prescribed to decrease inflammation in case of conditions like chronic asthma (Khan Academy, n.d.). Pregnancy can also be a contributor to the emergence of diabetes condition and gives rise to gestational diabetes.
