Incivility in Nursing
Introduction
Workplace violence, incivility, and bullying are prevalent concerns in the nursing environment. Although incivility has always been a source of workplace violence to most organizations, it has continued to get worse because it interferes with the learning and practice of healthcare professionals (Simpson, 2016). Incivility often lead to physiological and psychological distress hence causing feelings of loss, failure, and isolation. If incivility is left unaddressed, it may advance into more aggressive behaviors or situations. The victims may experience symptoms such as sleeplessness, anger, exhaustion, stress, anxiety, depression, and embarrassment (ANA, 2015). This paper focuses on explaining the issue of incivility using scholarly nursing literature as well as addressing the effect of incivility on microsystem work environments, individuals, and the nursing profession. In addition, the paper provides a scenario of incivility, describes three strategies for creating a healthful environment, and provides strategies to implement in master’s-prepared advanced practice. The paper concludes by providing a summary on the issue of incivility and strategies to create healthful environments.
Issue of Incivility
The American Nurses Association (ANA) defined incivility as any undesirable behaviors directed toward another person that are intimidating, rude, disruptive, and hostile (ANA, 2015). Incivility manifest itself through insults, false accusations, overruling agreed decisions, undermining the credibility and other unprecedented behaviors such as negative eye contacts and emotions. Workplace violence and incivility may be contributed by demographics of employees such as differences in age, beliefs, norms, social status, level of education, experience, seniority, gender, and workplace informality such as adopting a casual working environment. The issue adversely affects the effectiveness of an organization in providing a healthy, safe, and respectful work environment. Luparell (2011) noted that incivility affects the psychological and physiological status of the affected individuals and if the problem is not solved on time, it may advance to more threatening behaviors like stress and anxiety (Luparell, 2011).
Incivility in the nursing environment has adverse implications on effectiveness and productivity of health care providers, patients’ safety and outcomes, and reputation of healthcare organizations. In addition, incivility is costly to an organization because it wreaks havoc on workplace morale and nurses’ relationships as well as contributing to low employee retention rate. For example, nurse practitioners who are subjected to abuse and harassment are likely to quit their jobs while lack of good relationships among the healthcare providers and the patients impacts patients’ safety and experience (Dambra & Andrews, 2014). Due to the increased effect of incivility in the healthcare sector, various stakeholders have reviewed and implemented a new code of conducts and guidelines to prevent the occurrence of incivility in health care facilities (Asghari, Abdollahzadeh, Ebrahimi, Rahmani & Vahidi, 2017). Some of the proposed changes include a clear definition of responsibilities to ensure accountability, establishing a zero-tolerance policy for violence, decreasing workload, creating a reporting system, embracing counselling programs, solving doctor-related problems, and improving practitioners’ skills.
Impacts of incivility on individual Incivility in the nursing environment affects the psychological status of the targeted person, which finally affects their self-worth an esteem. This results in cognitive and impairment judgment by the affected individual. In addition, persistent….
