Reflection on Learning Weeks 1-8
Throughout this course, I have gained a deeper understanding of various theoretical frameworks that guide nursing practice and gained skills and knowledge necessary to provide evidence-based, patient-centered care in the advanced practice nursing role. I explored some foundational theories and concepts that underpin advanced nursing practice, such as nursing theories, philosophy, ethics, and research methods. This theory provides a framework for understanding the different ways that nurses know and use their empirical, ethical, personal, and aesthetic knowledge in their practice. Carper suggests that incorporating these key components of knowing, combined with the science available, improves patient centered care and better outcomes. Empirical knowledge uses evidence based practice with current research and up to date scientific knowledge that the nurse continues to learn throughout practice. A nurse also applies the basic ethical principles to guide their patient care, such as respecting patient autonomy and ensuring non-maleficence while being treated medically for their health concerns. To provide holistic care, the nurse may also very cautiously apply personal knowledge from their own experience and value system to impact their practice, making sure to reflect on personal biases and keep their own feelings in check while ultimately respecting the patient’s wishes. This theory emphasizes the importance of individuals taking responsibility for their own health and wellbeing, and the role of nurses in assisting individuals in achieving optimal self-care. Another common nursing theory is the Adaptation Model developed by Sister Callista Roy. This model focuses on the adaptation of individuals to changes in their environment, and the role of nurses in promoting adaptation and health. The Transcultural Nursing Theory developed by Madeleine Leininger emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting cultural differences in healthcare, and the role of nurses in providing culturally sensitive care to diverse patient populations. Another theory I relate to in my practice is the Theory of Human Caring developed by Jean Watson.
