Personal Philosophy of Nursing

Nursing is a calling for many people. The responsibilities that come with being a nurse make it necessary for people to have an interest in the field before choosing it as a lifelong career. Working as a nurse, gives one a sense of satisfaction as well as pride, especially in moments when a patient is taken through the journey to recovery. For most nurses, taking care or helping those in need is as equal as realizing their dream. Ever since I was young, nursing has been my passion, and the fact that I am now able to perform my duties as a nurse gives me a sense of fulfillment that I would not have achieved had I chosen another career path. I believe that holistic nursing care is critical because the practice helps me to provide quality care to all patients without compromising their values, beliefs, and personality. As a committed nurse, holistic nursing practices also help to integrate spirituality, self-responsibility, self-care, and reflection in my life.

Definition of Nursing

Nursing is a profession, discipline, or area of practice that aims at taking care of the injured, the disabled, the sick, and the dying. Nursing is the glue that holds patients and nurses together, and it is entitled to encourage the health of communities, families, and individuals in both community and medical environments. Nursing focus on collaborative and autonomous care of people of all ages and races. In most cases, nurses work in healthcare settings, but they can also work in other environments as long as they provide clinical care to people. Some of the primary roles of a nurse include health promotion and prevention of diseases (Shawahna, Abbas & Ghanem, 2019). Apart of addressing the health care needs of people in society, nurses are also involved in health advocacy, research, promotion of a safe environment, and contributing to the creation of effective health policies that may improve efficiency in healthcare delivery as well as the quality of care provided to people within a particular setting (Shawahna et al., 2019). From the analysis of the definition and roles of nurses, it is evident that they are essential in any community or society due to their contribution towards improved healthcare.

Assumptions or Underlying Beliefs

Various beliefs or assumptions guide the nursing profession. One of the major beliefs in nursing is that it takes a humanist approach. According to the concept, nurses exist for the benefit of other people in society, and they are focused on addressing the healthcare challenges that people might have irrespective of who they are or what they do. Another belief is that nursing involves empathy and caring. Empathy refers to a nurse’s ability to be sensitive to the feelings and thoughts of their patients and families (Debono et al., 2013). It is believed that nurses always can tune in and be in line with the patient’s experiences to better care for them.

Additionally, another belief with regards to nursing is the fact that all nurses are critical thinkers. Nursing involves working in highly stressful environments such as emergency departments and making appropriate clinical decisions. It is, therefore, a common belief that nurses must always critically think when presented with patient problems so that they can address them properly.

The Four Major Domains of Nursing As Debono et al. (2013) discuss, the four major domains of nursing are nursing, person, health, and environment. Nursing refers to the act of providing healthcare services to patients. Apart from treating different illnesses, nursing also involves other roles that contribute to the improvement of people’s health, such as health promotion. Person refers to the people that are beneficiaries of nursing services in the healthcare continuum. People may range from patients to other members of the community who may benefit from the health promotions that are usually carried out by nurses (Valentine, 2013). Health, on the other hand…
