The “Odd-Ball” Child

Phenomenon: In this research project I would want to investigate the idea of the “Odd-ball” child in contact of proper psychological development. Why do these children often develop psychological issues in adolescence/adulthood and how might we be able to prevent this?

Variables: Independent variable: Identification of “other” and the identification of “belonged”. Dependent variable: Proper psychological development mediated variable: development confined to four components (1) self-image (2) academic competence (3) externalized issues such as burst of anger or fighting (4) internalized issues such as hopelessness and depression. 

Design: I would collect my data through a series of self-reported AND parent-reported information. Each participant, child(5th graders) and parent, will take a test regarding themselves, asking for character and interest (including two answers to each question; example, Art or Math). Next, they will take a test about the the other, asking about their character and interests. This test will conclude with this question “Do you feel like you are greatly different from most, if all, members of your family” or “do you feel like your child is greatly different from most, if all, members of your family”. Then groups are created, (1) children who shared 20% or less responses with their parent. (2) Children shared 80% or more of their responses with their parent. (3) Children who answered yes to feeling different AND their parents answered yes as well (4) children who answered no to felling different AND their parent said no as well. This way of collecting and grouping is most affective because it only vitalizes more extreme indifference. This tries to capture “odd-ball”-ness as a stand alone factor and “belonging” as a stand alone factor. Additionally, group 3 and 4 isolate how just identifying as “other” can affect and individual. After this collection, the child will take a psychological development test. This test will also be self report but isolate four traits of development and use deliberate, precise language (example: Do I feel self conscious about my body at least one or more times a day, yes or no). These tests will continue every other year until they reach the age of 18. The final test will be taken with their parent, asking if their child has expressed any of these traits to them (example: has your child told you they feel self conscious about their body at least 2 times every week?). This will be affective because it shows the use of communication and regulation. We will analyze the test and look for the results of children who opening spoke to their parents and those who didn’t. How do they differ? Does communicating minimize “otherness”?

Hypothesis: Children who are labeled as “odd-ball” are at higher risk for impaired development because that identity manifests into a snow ball effecting. Beginning with insecure attachment and lack of belonging and ending with rejection of tradition and familial patterns (especially one which could promote growth and healing) due to fear and lack of trust. I propose emotional regulation and communication skills, within elementary education, as a preventive measure for these children. In hopes to slow or intervene in the snowball effect of “otherness”.

-Personality Assessment is a proficiency in professional psychology that involves the administration, scoring, and interpretation of empirically supported measures of personality traits and styles in order to: Refine clinical diagnoses; Structure and inform psychological interventions.

-Explicitly identify and describe the independent variable, the dependent variable, and any mediating variables that may exist.?

-The independent variables Extraversion, Suitability, Honesty, Enthusiastic Soundness, and Judgment skills measured the Huge Five components of identity characteristics build, and the subordinate variable, Record Security Behavior, measured the EISB construct

-The dependent variable was a score on a test that reflected type A inclinations. In spite of the fact that identity is so complex that it cannot truly be portrayed by a single score, the test for Sort A behavior gives an estimation that’s objective and measurable

-Design a research plan as to how you would collect the data for the purposes of this research; clearly making an argument as to why the data collection you propose is the best way to do it.

-The way I would design the research is to make several mindfulness questions for the survey taker to determine what type of personality they have. For example, I will have certain questions like over 30 questions for individuals to see what they would choose in certain circumstances. I would make a plan to have individuals select what types of situations would they prefer that most relate to them. Like, would they consider themselves to be introverted or outgoing, or would they see themselves working a 9-5 or would they be their own bosses? I would give an opportunity to the people around the world so I can see how many people think alike and see if there is a connection between people based on their country and the environment they live in. I think this is the best way to collect such a big piece of research that involves everyone around the world.  By giving out these surveys you have the opportunity to see who people really are.
