Essay Purpose
In this final exam, students will perform their own critique of a myth not yet written about
and analyze how that myth exemplifies two traits characteristic of parallel myths.
Readings
Read and select two quotations from pages 257-266 of Bierlein’s Parallel
Myths where you will find famous authors’ comments about myths.
In case you have an ebook of Parallel Myths, pages 257-266 correspond
with “Part Three: The. Modern Readings of Myths” and is the entire
Chapter 12 “Views of Myth and Meaning.”
Instructions
In your introductory paragraph (Should only be one paragraph long and
no longer than three quarters of a page.)
Select any one myth from Parallel Myths that you have not yet written about in any
previous essay on for our class.
1. Summarize your chosen myth.
2. Then provide historical background information about the myth’s culture and
any important historical events that can help a reader unfamiliar with the myth
grasp the story better; for this, you will need to do some research for outside
sources.
In your thesis answer the following question
Which two specific important aspects of myths–described by any one or two of authors
quoted on pages 257-266 of Parallel Myths–did you find in your chosen myth?
In your body paragraphs, make sure to
• Support your thesis by quoting from Parallel Myths for this class.
• Make sure to follow up each quotation with a 4-5 sentence explanation of how
it supports your topic sentence claim.
