Overview

There is never a shortage of challenges in our lives; it’s how we approach those challenges that matters. This reflective exercise helps break large challenges into small actionable steps, generating small wins. Learning to use outsight to help with your own and organizational problems demonstrates your willingness to listen and employ other people’s ideas, creating a team environment in which everybody feels important and included. When you purposefully generate a win for someone else, you help build their confidence and competence, showing them they are not alone and that you are there to help them. Practicing exercises such as these will help build your leadership skills until they become part of your regular behaviors. You will develop as a leader, support other people’s leadership development, and in turn, improve future organizations in which you are part of, as a whole.

Directions

Follow these steps to complete this assignment:

1. Download and print two copies of this document (or be ready to digitally share a copy).

2. Ask someone you know to complete this activity with you, and share a copy of this worksheet with them.

3. Complete the following tasks in the table below:

A. Individually, identify a current challenge that feels so overwhelming you can’t seem to get started with it, get past it, and/or move toward your goal. What challenge are you facing in your life right now? Do you feel stuck in how you will meet this challenge? Put in as much detail as needed for someone else to understand the situation.

B. Also individually, list the obstacles you believe are in the way of making progress past that challenge.

C. Next, come back together with your partner and share your responses with each other and help each other create a clear next step to tackle the issue and generate a small win. Summarize the small win your partner helped generate for you.

D. After completing this activity with your partner, individually describe the small win you helped generate for your partner and explain how can activities like this help your leadership development.

E. Finally, reflect on the conversation with your partner. Did you find it helpful to bounce ideas off of someone else? How can activities like this help your leadership development?
