The paper addresses the problem of nursing staff shortage in US healthcare system. The problem has resulted in Long Term Acute Care (LTAC) patients, aged 40 years and above, staying to between 4 weeks and 4 months at health facilities.

Patient/ population problem: Nurse shortage is a major problem in US healthcare system. The real challenge is to ensure that staffing levels are as per policy, legal and management standards in order to maintain quality care to the patients CITATION Fer \l 1033 (Ferrer, et al., 2014). The shortage has been aggravated by rise in service demands, low number of new registered nurses entering practice and retirement of experienced nurses CITATION Cov15 \l 1033 (Coventry, Maslin‐Prothero, & Smith, 2015).

Another issue that has led to shortage of nurses is high turnover rate of nurses CITATION Buc15 \l 1033 (Buchan, Duffield, & Jordan, 2015). Research shows that 1 out 3 nurses leave within 2 years of beginning to work in a facility (Blitchok, 2018). In cases of highly stressful chronic disease nursing experiences, 1 out of 5 new nurses leave the profession completely within a year of obtaining practice license (Blitchok, 2018).

Researchers forecast that the problem may be worse in future where demand for nurses will exceed supply by far (Carnevale, Smith, & Gulish, 2015). This problem sometimes leads to closure of vital healthcare facilities or reduction in quality and nature of service offered (Kelly, 2014). It also means that there will continue to be low nurse to patient ratios, which ends up lowering quality of health-care provided (Black, 2014). In facilities that handle chronic conditions, the shortage can lead to overworking of available registered nurses and involving licensed practical nurses or even interns CITATION Cho16 \l 1033 (Cho, et al., 2016).

Intervention: Evidence based practice (EBP) approach in case study relying on survey data obtained from a random sample of respondents selected from the population of nurses within the facility will be used to find out approaches to solving the problem. Four selected hospitals within the State will be studied.

Comparison: Patients involved in the study are Long Term Acute Care (LTAC) patients at the facilities. Nurses and hospital managements will also part of participants.
