Scenario: Another Distraction

Susan finds four more articles: two on conspiracy theories and two on misinformation. She realizes it’s getting late, and she still hasn’t completed her discussion posts for school. One click later, she is back to staring at the discussion.

“Are you going to do nothing but stare at the computer all night?” Mark asks her. “There’s a time for work and a time to relax.”

“I have a lot to get done,” Susan replies. If she fails this course, her mom will never let her live it down. She can just imagine what her mom will say if she does: “You’re too lazy to ever get through school! What made you waste your money?”

“You’re just staring, not working,” Mark points out. “Maybe what you need is a distraction. Let me tell you about this party that I’m planning.”

As Mark launches into a lengthy description of the party, Susan wonders if he has a point about her concentration. Considering how much she’s trying to focus but not getting anything done, maybe she does need something to refresh herself.

Social psychology can help you understand the world around you and answer questions about why people behave the way they do. Why is it so hard to take a chance and go back to school? Why do people start smoking when they know it’s bad for them? Why do protests turn violent at times? Being able to apply social psychological theory to personal and professional situations as well as to current events is a skill you need in order to take steps toward that understanding.
