Philosophy of Teaching and Learning.

Develop a 2 page statement of your philosophy of teaching and learning. The section on learning theories will help with beliefs about learners and teaching, as will the section on what students of today are like. Your philosophy statement should include your beliefs about learners, teaching, content, applicable to the role you envision as an educator—staff, continuing, and/or academic. Use APA format.

* Reflect on the results of the teaching and learning style inventories that you completed.

* Consider your values as an educator.

* Consider the content you will be teaching. Some content may lend itself toward a particular type of teaching.

* Consider the teaching setting where you will be teaching. If most of your teaching is done in the clinical area, this might make your philosophy different from teaching of a didactic nature.

* Consider the type of student you will likely be teaching—ADN students, BSN students, MS or PhD students, continuing education students, or nursing/ health science staff education.

* Include in your discussion what resources guided your thought process in formulating your philosophy statement: e.g., theory (theories), mission statement, scholarly sources, etc. Use text citations. Include a reference list.

* More guidelines for teaching philosophy: Think about these questions when developing your philosophy:

• How do people learn?
• How do I facilitate that learning?
• What goals do I have for my students?
• Why do I teach the way that I do?
• What do I do to implement these ideas about teaching and learning in the classroom?
• Are these things working? Do my students meet the goals?
• How do I know they are working?
• What are my future goals for growth as a teacher?
