What am I required to do in this assignment? |
The assessment must be completed individually. You must do all the five case studies and then submit a written assignment of 2,000 words by the hand-in deadline. Case Study 1: · Issue: Objectification/Self objectification of the gendered body · Case: You can choose to study a fitness club’s website or a celebrity’s Instagram posts about his/her own fitness-related activities. · Write up a critical analysis of 400 words by drawing on relevant academic literature. Case Study 2: · Issue: Racist abuse directed at athletes on social media · Case: You should study an incident of an athlete being racially abused on social media, which has been reported by the mass media. · Write up a critical analysis of 400 words by drawing on relevant academic literature. Case Study 3: · Issue: Security and sports mega-events. · Case: You should study security concerns at either the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics or the EURO 2020. · Write up a critical analysis of 400 words by drawing on relevant academic literature. Case Study 4: · Issue: Moral concerns over commercial partnership between sport and the gambling industry. · Case: You should study a case of a gambling company sponsoring a sports event or team. · Write up a critical analysis of 400 words by drawing on relevant academic literature. Case Study 5: · Issue: Accountability and transparency of sports governing bodies · Case: You should study either the FA’s handling of the resignation of Greg Clarke or the British Cycling’s handling of the doping scandal surrounding Dr Richard Freeman · Write up a critical analysis of 400 words by drawing on relevant academic literature. Written assignment: The five critical analyses, a reference list and the Appendices should all be included in one Word document, with each critical analysis being a separate section. The five section headings should be the five issues for study respectively. Referencing must be done in the UoB Harvard Style. The non-academic sources of information utilised in your case studies should be put in the Appendices. |

1. Complete the case studies in the 5 scheduled ‘case study’ weeks. 1. Read through the relevant lecture notes and develop a good understanding of the issues under study. 1. When conducting each case study, first identify one or two key points which are discussed at lecture and illustrated in the chosen case, and then read some academic literature directly relevant to the identified key points to further develop your knowledge. 1. When writing up each case study, very briefly explain the chosen case first. Then critically analyse the chosen case by drawing on relevant academic literature. 1. Proofread and correct any errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar. 1. Submit in time! |

Week 4 lecture explains how to conduct case study. The lectures scheduled in Week 5-12 and 16-17 examine the five controversial issues of which you are required to conduct case studies. |
