According to George Kelly, there are four common elements in most human disturbance. These are threat, fear, guilt, and anxiety. Kelly defined threat as the tendency of an individual to be aware of imminent change in their core constructs and ultimately in the conception of themselves (Kelly, 2020). Threat is induced particularly when a person perceives any possible alternatives to their core constructs. Psalm 144:1 is an assurance of God’s protection from any threats for He has trained and hardened everyone for difficulty.
Fear on the other hand is being aware of an imminent incidental change in one’s constructs but is much less interesting (Kelly, 2020). Because the change of an individual’s constructs due to fear is small, the person may handle it without reference to psychotherapy. The Bible in Psalm 34:4 assures believers that only God can deliver them of all fears when they call on Him.
Guilt is an individual’s experience accompanying their perceptions that they have been displaced from their core roles. A core role is a subsystem of the core construct enabling one to describe and predict their behavior (Warren, 2015). It provides one with a sense of identity. Guilt invalidates one’s core constructs whereby the individual finds out that he/she is not what they thought they were. For guilt to be strong and psychologically significant, the difference between what one thought to be and what they realize they are has to be relevant.
Anxiety occurs when one cannot make sense of what is happening. It is common when a person finds himself in a new situation (Warren, 2015). Only those who have a higher-order construction system can finally derive meaning from their situation and make informed choices on how best to respond to the situation. Philippians 4:6-7 asks believers to not be anxious about anything but to pray and wait on the Lord for redemption.
