At one time, there was significant support for capital punishment in America; however, as of 1994, support for capital punishment is declining, reaching an all-time low in 2015 (Sarat et al., 2017). The authors argue that the decline has too due to a change in public opinion and the rhetoric used by capital punishment abolitionists to persuade individuals that innocent individuals are being put to death (Sarat et al., 2017). Through activism, public opinion has caused lawmakers to take a serious look at capital punishment in our country.
