My first goal is to develop good leadership skills that will enable me to start and maintain a non-profit organization in which I help individuals who were incarcerated transition back into society on an educational basis. Currently, I serve as an Administrative Specialist for The South Carolina Department of Corrections for the Education Department. Our district is designed to help further the education of individuals who are incarcerated. We provide resources and opportunities through various trade school programs such as Carpentry and CDL, as well as the basic education of a High School Diploma or GED. I want to be able to extend that opportunity to incarcerated individuals who didn’t have the chance to enroll and to those who were enrolled to expand their education even more. It is extremely hard for these individuals to acquire education after being released. My second goal is to hold the occupation of a higher-level position such as a Senior Human Resource Manager. Pursuing a DBA degree will help me acquire effective human resource skills that will assist me in securing this position. This position will not only benefit me in ways of increased compensation, but also by gaining access to a variety of components such as increased leadership skills. Human Resource Management is the operational center of an organization, as it is the approach to effective management of people within a company or organization. My third goal is to develop my ability to think critically and make better decisions. Through a DBA degree, I will learn critical thinking skills, such as inference, explanation, observation, reflection, evaluation, analysis, interpretation, and problem-solving. These critical thinking skills are effective in decision-making (Özelçi & Çaliskan, 2019). Critical thinking skills will enhance my presentation and language skills which is critical in being a Senior Human Resource Manager. Self-Analysis I possess several strengths that I feel are well-suited completing my doctoral degree. One of my main strengths would be my ability to prioritize when it comes to time management. I am very proficient when it comes to meeting deadlines for assignments because I tend to submit assignments days prior to them being due. This gives me an additional amount of time to thoroughly complete and focus on future assignments. An additional strength that I possess is the proficient writing skills that I am equipped with. Writing has always been a subject that I’ve been unique and exceled in because I enjoy looking at different aspects of literature. My past writing experiences have tremendously contributed to my current advancement. My main strength would be my commitment in regards to obtaining a higher level of education as I have obtained 2 degrees in only 5 ½ years. My commitment entails that I am very disciplined and motivated to achieve what I desire and more. I do, on the other hand, recognize that I have several weaknesses that I may encounter while completing the course. One of my weaknesses would be my ability to get easily distracted. I often tend to get distracted mainly by social media as I am constantly on my phone for a large portion of the day. This causes a delay in starting an assignment whether it’s just by a few minutes or hours. My greatest weakness would be my ability to overthink, especially when I begin writing a discussion or essay. For example, I could spend a large amount of time brainstorming and researching and begin to get frustrated because I haven’t progressed. My biggest opportunity would definitely be the ability of getting mentored from two of my family members who have both received their doctorate from Walden University. In order to obtain a doctorate, it requires a strong mental health as it can be very triggering because of the challenging demands of the program. It is very important for me to find balance and eliminate stress as much as possible and my family helps tremendously with that. Their advice on how to be successful in the program is very critical because their individuals who have physically been through the numerous challenging phases. Also, receiving information from Two doctors that I personally know is even more significant. However, I don’t possess any threats in obtaining a higher level of education. Organizational leadership is an issue of critical concern in modern organizations. It is the process in which leaders set strategic goals for their companies and motivate employees to work towards them (Zeb et al., 2018). Leaders necessarily provide a vision for their organizations and sharing it with the workforce. They also delegate and empower other employees to continue in the direction they have set for the organization, ensuring the adherence to every duty and the achievement to set goals. Currently, there are a few leadership skills that I want to improve by pursuing a degree. With the improvement of these skills, I will be an effective organizational leader who can lead to changes that transform organizations. The other goal I have while pursuing a doctoral degree is to gain practical research skills. Currently, I realize that I have acquired some research skills. However, I seek to perfect my research skills to the extent that I can handle specialized research. Ideally, specialized research is used to inform action in a particular field. It contributes to the development of knowledge and helps determine the realistic side of things apart from personal beliefs and speculations that are not verified (Eyisi, 2016). With specialized research skills, I can develop practical theories of management. The modern work environment critically needs the development of new theories of management that can solve modern problems. Therefore, the achievement of the doctorate program’s specialized research skills will give me the ability to lead organizational developments based on proven studies. 3 Self-Analysis My SWOT analysis indicated that I have several strengths that will help me complete my doctorate program. I found that I am highly creative, and I have impeccable analytical and communication skills. These skills place me at an advantaged position to complete the doctorate instrumentally. Ideally, they will allow me to effectively handle my learning since I can handle tasks creatively, communicate well with peers, and find practical solutions to hard elements of the course. Besides the skills I possess, I consider that my experience as an operational officer in the military will give me an upper hand when handling the program. I am also an active believer in mission accomplishment; thus, when I set my eyes on completing the program, I will pursue it until I achieve success. Also, I realize that I have weaknesses that may affect my success, ultimately. Being a perfectionist will hinder my ability to complete tasks since I only want them done appropriately. This quality will affect how I delegate duties and work with groups, especially if my group members do not share the same qualities. The program is, however, promising and will provide me the opportunity to understand organizations better. I also stand in a position to be funded by the organization I currently work for. Nonetheless, I have some health issues, including a previous heart attack I suffered and the fact that I still battle PTSD. I could also fail to get a better position in my organization after graduation in my doctorate. While all these impediments stand in my way, I am committed to increasing my knowledge through the program, which will enable me to maintain the focus until I complete it. 4 Strategy and Design The goals that I developed touch on my professional, educational, health, and life issues. Altogether, my strategy is to be an effective business leader. However, it cannot be realized if my health and life are at stake. As an individual who has suffered a heart attack before and still fighting PSTD, I realize that it is quintessential for me to develop a strategy that will not risk my health. At the same time, I cannot understate my academic interests, which is why my time management strategy must delve towards creating enough time for my learning activities. Also, matters of life and personal relationships are imperative to me. Therefore, I should develop a plan that allows me time to relate who is close to me. Lastly, the strategy should consider that I am working, and it should not be constrained to the point that it reduces the quality of work I deliver in my organization. For the educational goal, I will engage in three activities, which are classwork, revision, and research. I will schedule three hours for them as they are imperative in my academic outcomes. To fulfill the goal of effectively working and enhancing my career, during weekdays, I will be securing eight working hours to my work as I have typically been doing. I will not agree or accept overtime hours because they will conflict with my academic learning hours. Additionally, for personal relationships, I will secure an hour during weekdays and two hours on weekends to meet with family and friends. When necessary, I will also undertake charity events. Lastly, for my health goals, I will be working out and engaging in other activities that promote my health for an hour per day. I still consider eating a healthy activity; hence I will secure two 5 hours for it daily. Also, in consideration of my health, I will ensure that I have adequate sleep for six hours every day. Sleeping-6 hours the activities. Figure 1. Indicates the activities that underscore the education, work, relationship, and health goals, followed by the time assigned to each activity. 6 The developed plan meets the checklist meant for useful time maps. Ideally, a time map should showcase the goals and individual is planning for. It should also indicate the activities that are meant to achieve each goal. Besides, it should indicate the time that is assigned for every defined activity. Essentially, the time map I have developed shows all my four goals and indicates the activities necessary for reaching the goals alongside with the time that has been allocated for each activity. The activities are rationally developed in a way that every one of them happens in the accorded time. To ensure that I respect the time map, I will use two tools; a journal and phone scheduler. The journal will be essential as it will indicate the time I spend for each activity, allowing me to rectify behavior such that I stay in line with my time map. On the other hand, phone scheduler will help me plan for each of the activities. The tool’s effectiveness is that it can indicate the time within when each activity should start and end. Utilizing the two tools will allow for the successful adherence to the time map. Making It Happen Running my strategy to success will not be simple. Stauffer et al. (2015) indicate that proper appropriation of time and resources between graduate school and work can be challenging. I understand that the reason it is hard to achieve is that the goals and activities appear to be competing. In my case, all the four goals I have established are all imperative for my success. However, if I do not stick to the plant, I will not be successful in realizing some of the goals. Such an understanding prompts that I should know how to keep a balance and pursue all the goals equally. One of the approaches that I will utilize is to make a routine. A routine 7 works for me because I will be knowing the timeline for every activity and following it actively, which will ensure that I conduct all the activities in strict adherence to the plan. Moreover, I consider that with my health issues, I need a support system. Using a support system does not diminish the ability of an individual as a graduate learner (Stauffer et al., 2015). Instead, the support system will be helpful as it will enable me to develop my timelines. It will also provide me the emotional support; I could desire to handle specific tasks within the necessary time. It is widely acknowledged that time management is critical for successful graduate programs (Jo et al., 2014). Therefore, having a support system will give me …
