QUESTION 1. (compulsory)
With reference to Green’s (2008) short story titled “Tokoloshe,” identify the main theme and motivate why you have decided upon this particular theme among others.
QUESTION 2.
From the remaining 6 elements of fiction outlined in your notes, choose only one, and critically analyse the manner in which the author highlights specific aspects of humanity through that particular element. Here is the list to choose from:
• Characterisation
• Setting
• Conflict
• Plot
• Atmosphere/ mood/ tone
• Point of view/ narrative method/ perspective.
IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE AS YOU WORK ON YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
• Consult secondary sources. Interrogate 3 or more journal articles that speak to your topic. Your argument should be scholarly i.e. should be based on what scholars say.
• In-text referencing: When citing a certain scholar’s work, use only the surname, followed by the year of publication in brackets. If you want to quote verbatim, include the page number, e.g. Smith (2021: 18) states that the purpose of setting in any work of fiction … NB: Whatever appears in your in-text referencing MUST also appear in your reference list at the end of your work.
• If your source has referenced another scholar, both scholars should be acknowledged e.g. Banda (2014) in Smith (2021) argues that …
• In Literary Analysis, always present your argument in the Present Tense. This will help you to avoid rehearsing the plot, which amounts to plagiarism.
How to avoid rehearsing the plot: Do not tell the marker what they already know i.e. do not repeat the narrative. Tell them something new, that is going to be interesting, but make sure that you back it up with ideas from scholars.
• Do not plagiarise from those journal articles, acknowledge someone else’s work.
• INTRODUCTION: (apply the information provided in your SP classes i.e. academic writing skills)
What do scholars say about your topic?
What do you say about your topic? (in your own words elaborate on what the scholars say, to show that you understand the topic).
At the end of your introduction, give your thesis statement e.g. … this essay will take a closer look/ scrutinise/ critically analyse/ evaluate … etc. This serves as a guide so that you don’t find yourself writing out of context.
