Concept Map: The 3Ps and Mental Health Care

NURS FPX 4015 Assessment 3 Mental health disorders can be described as complex diseases with biological, psychological, and social causes, making it crucial to have a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and management of these diseases (Kirkbride et al., 2024). The interconnections can be effectively mapped in the form of concept maps, which aids in a more organized and systematic approach when diagnosing, contemplating an intervention, and managing care for the patient. This will involve the construction of a concept map analyzing the pathophysiology, pharmacology, and physical assessment of the nominated case of a mental health patient. The selected case study involves a 43-year-old Mediterranean male, Marco Mancini, with the aim being to also present various clinical considerations concerning his condition. This assessment will include the patient’s evaluation concerning his mental health status and propose a comprehensive care plan based on the findings.
Evidence-Based Schizophrenia Diagnosis

Schizophrenia is a major mental illness viewed as a chronic brain disorder that results in behavioral and psychological abnormalities that negatively affect the individual’s day-to-day activities. To constitute schizophrenia, based on DSM-5, there must be at least two or more first-rank symptomology including; hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, and negative symptoms (Hany et al., 2024). These symptoms must persist for at least 6 months. Some of the factors identified by Rawani et al. (2024) include neurotransmission, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction in psychosis. Moreover, Doser et al., (2024) have also revealed that neurofibromatosis type 1 adults have neurocognitive deficits in areas such as executive functioning and attention. Moreover, Ven et al. (2025) note that early intervention in psychosis faces several barriers including inadequate funding, stigma, and access to effective packages that address the challenges. Knowledge and evidence-based practice of diagnosis of schizophrenia assists in the right diagnosis of the patient, and decision-making on the use of intervention to fit this disorder.
Evidence-Based Interventions

Schizophrenia is classified as a psychotic disorder that entails distortions of thought, perceptions, affect, and behavior that affect the life of a patient (Stewart, 2024 ). The condition usually necessitates the use of medication, psychological and social therapies, and other approaches adjusted according to the patient’s history. For the case of a 43-year-old Mediterranean male named Marco Mancini, the counseling interventions that need to be applied must respect cultural and individual differences. Sampogna et al. (2023)show that antipsychotic medications are effective in the management of schizophrenia-related symptoms and the integrated functioning of the patients. Further, Nakao et al. (2021) also highlighted that the evolution of cognitive-behavioral therapy also increases its applicability in providing mental health and stress-related disorders. Several relationship interventions like psychoeducation processes and supported employment interventions have been known to provide optimum long-term gains (Killaspy et al., 2022). Reducing cultural prejudice and improving the availability of community support also add to the effectiveness of the treatments in various cultures.
Strategies for Safe and Effective Patient Care in Schizophrenia

Caring for patients with schizophrenia involves the use of psychiatric medications, psychotherapy, and associated interventions. The importance of early antipsychotic therapy is evident from the fact that it has successfully decreased the rate of relapse with Chokhawala & Stevens (2023) positing that schizophrenic and other psychotic disorders involve dysregulation of dopamine neurotransmitter and require medication for managing the condition. Moreover, the integration of CBT with Medication Adherence Programs has been effective in improving other outcomes of treatment, as mentioned by Waqas et al., (2020) which also emphasizes that educational practices are critical to addressing stigma linked to mental health in learning institutions. This can be seen especially in multicultural populations, to reduce discrimination and ensure sustained client participation in the therapy process. Care coordination and other such specific programs like coordinated specialty care (CSC) guarantee that the patient receives support in medication compliance, cognitive function recovery, as well as reintegration into society.
Conclusion

Schizophrenia requires multi-faceted intervention because of its rooted nature in the biological, psychological, and social aspects of an individual. Compliance with antipsychotic drugs, cognitive behavioral therapy, and social support to boost outcomes show that they play a very crucial role in enhancing the rehabilitation process (Sampogna et al., 2023). Moreover, stigmatization and personnel cultural competence are paramount in enhancing patient retention and compliance with long-term treatment plans. Current care models such as coordinated specialty care (CSC) along with early intervention of the disorder show that relapse will not occur hence improving the results. This comprehensive approach covers the necessary steps to guarantee safe, patient-centered, and effective treatment for people with schizophrenia and thus contributes to the improvement of patients’ quality of life.
