WHAT YOU ARE REQUIRED TO DO FOR THIS ASSESSMENT
You are required to produce an original desk-based case study about a public health issue relating to a specific context, population, or community (student choice of topic).
Your case study will be a written essay of 3000 words (+/-10%). The pass grade is 50%. The essay contributes to 100% of your grade for this module. The assessment is rated at Level 7.
You will upload this to Moodle/Turnitin in Microsoft Word format. Your essay must be written in the English language, using a font of size 12, 1.5 or double-spaced, all pages numbered.
You must ensure that your essay is your own, original work. You must include evidence of wider reading of theory and research evidence. This must be referenced appropriately.
Tables, figures, and the reference list are not counted in the word allowance and may be used freely. Please state the source of any table, figure, etc. that is not your own, original work.
Only your own desk-based research study is required for this assessment. You must not conduct primary research (empirical data collection) for this assessment.

2. MAIN BODY (3000-word allowance ±10%)
The structure of the main body will vary according to your choice of topic and writing style. There is no definitive approach to writing a case study – so, we recommend that you choose one of the following approaches when planning, researching, and writing your case study:
Exploratory Case Study: this type of case study aims to explore the context(s) and topic(s) of interest, with the goal of identifying new or emerging issues that require further exploration or investigation.
Explanatory Case Study: this type of case study aims to explore ‘what, why and how’ specific issues or challenges have arisen and how they are being addressed within a particular context, population, or community.
Intrinsic Case Study: this type of case study aims to explore a specific issue or topic that is unique to a narrowly defined context, population, or community and which is ‘important in its own right’ and may not be widely understood.
Instrumental Case Study: this type of case study focused on a single case but uses this to explore wider theories, concepts, or principles, and explores their application or transferability to different contexts.
Comparative Case Study: this type of case study selects two or more contexts, populations or communities and compares/contrasts these to explore and explain commonalities and differences in health experiences and outcomes.
Your case study will require you to synthesise (bring together) a range of ideas in a clear and organised way. This can be a thought-provoking exercise, and so we recommended that you discuss your ideas in class with your peers and module tutor.
You must include theory and evidence drawn from beyond the reading list. Your discussion will include discussion of society, economics, politics and science/technological issues as much as they relate to your chosen case study, and discussion of public health leadership.
